Overview

The climbing wall is free for all Tarleton students and Campus Recreation Center members. The climbing wall offers bouldering and top-rope climbing at heights up to 35 feet. Climbing difficulty varies from beginner to advanced.

  • Belay certifications are offered to any patrons interested, ask an Outdoor Pursuits staff member for more information.

Rules and Policies

The Climbing Center Staff have final say on any safety issues. Climbers disregarding these rules may lose climbing privileges.

  • All climbers must sign a Climbing Wall liability waiver. Patrons under 18 must have this form signed by their parent or guardian.
  • All climbers and belayers must wear shoes. No bare feet are allowed on the Climbing Wall or floor. Athletic clothes are required.
  • Personal harnesses and shoes may be used at the Climbing Wall only at the discretion of the Outdoor Pursuits staff. Climbers must demonstrate proper use of their equipment.
  • Only provided belay devices may be used.
  • Jewelry must be removed before climbing, especially rings, watches, and large earrings.
  • Please report any injures, loose holds, or damage to equipment.
  • Food and beverages, other than water, are not allowed in the climbing area. Water must be in a closed container.
  • Climber’s feet may not exceed the maximum height for bouldering. Outdoor Pursuits staff can show climbers the appropriate height if requested.
  • Crash pads are mandatory while bouldering.
  • Bouldering climbers should give way to roped climbers. Bouldering is not to occur below roped climbers.
  • A belay skills test must be performed before patrons are allowed to belay themselves or other climbers.
  • Tarleton Outdoor Pursuits offers a Belay Certification, which is valid for one year from the date of certification. This must be renewed annually at no additional charge.
  • Climbers must climb under the anchor to which they are connected.
  • Belayers must keep their brake hand on the rope at all times while belaying.
  • All belayers are recommended to be attached to a floor anchor with a locking carabiner.
  • Climbing Wall procedures require all climbers to be tied in using a Figure 8 Follow Through knot and Double Overhand knot to secure the end.

These rules are provided for the wellbeing of all parties, however they do not guarantee safety. Participants who choose not to abide by these rules may have their climbing privileges revoked.
