Speaker Symposium Series at Tarleton

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University’s Speaker Symposium Series continues Tuesday, Oct. 3, when former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros discusses “American Latinos and the Nation’s Future.”
The free presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium on the Stephenville campus and is open to the public.
One of the first Hispanic Americans to run a major city, Texas A&M graduate Cisneros came to national prominence when he was elected mayor of San Antonio in 1981. During his four terms, Cisneros rebuilt the city’s economy by increasing tourism, attracting high-technology firms and creating tens of thousands of jobs. The American Mayor named him one of the nation’s 15 best mayors of the 19th and 20th centuries.
His appearance at Tarleton coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month and is part of the school’s ongoing centennial celebration as founding member The Texas A&M University System.
“Our goal as a committee is to bring in speakers with perspectives our students don’t normally hear on campus,” said Dr. Marcy Tanter, professor of English and languages at Tarleton and chair of the Speaker Symposium Committee. “We’re very excited to be able to bring a speaker of such prominence.”
Among his many achievements, the former president and chief operating officer of Univision and the co-founder of Latino Donor Collaborative, Cisneros serves on the advisory boards of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Broad Foundation and the National Hispanic University. He has a Ph.D. in public administration from the George Washington University and served as president of the National League of Cities. He has appeared on Fox, The Charlie Rose Show and CNBC.
