STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State University and the Copperas Cove Independent School District have joined forces to provide annual scholarships and guaranteed admission to the top 25 percent of the Copperas Cove High School graduating class.
The Distinguished High School Partnership program goes into effect with the 2020-21 school year. The agreement also means American College Test (ACT) or Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT) requirements will be waived by the university for Copperas Cove students in the top quarter of their class, as will application fees for students who qualify.
“We’re very excited to partner with Copperas Cove High School to ensure that some of the best and brightest students in Texas have the opportunity for a high-quality university experience,” said Tarleton President James L. Hurley. “This partnership aligns with our commitment to become a first-choice institution for regional high school seniors. They are destined to be our leaders and we have a social and economic responsibility to invest in their well-being.”
Tarleton is developing similar agreements with other school districts in the region.
“It’s a benefit to our kids, and we have a lot of kids that go to Tarleton,” CCISD Superintendent Joe Burns said.
Board President Joan Manning agreed. “It’s a win-win for our students. It’s really exciting for our seniors that will be graduating this year.”
The Guaranteed Award Program (GAP) assures first-time-in-college students graduating in the top quarter of their high school class between $1,000 and $4,000 in scholarships. Students graduating from one of Tarleton’s Distinguished High School Partners, now including Bridgeport High School, will receive an additional $500 or $1,000. Admitted freshmen must submit a general scholarship application to determine eligibility.
