Tarleton professor appointed to statistics education committee

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State University professor Dr. Thomas Faulkenberry will represent the Mathematical Association of America on the Joint Committee on Statistics Education, an endeavor of the MAA and the American Statistical Association. The committee exists to stimulate change in undergraduate statistical education.

As a committee member he will make recommendations concerning statistics teaching practices, faculty qualifications, statistics requirements for undergraduate majors, and the use of computers in undergraduate statistics courses.

The committee consists of 12 members, six appointed by the ASA and six by the MAA. Faulkenberry will serve three years, starting in January 2020.

He joined Tarleton’s Department of Psychological Sciences in 2013. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, a master’s in mathematics from Oklahoma State University and a doctorate in psychology from Texas A&M University-Commerce.

An active researcher, Faulkenberry has published more than 30 papers on numerical cognition, mathematical modeling, the psychology of mathematics learning and Bayesian statistics. He is a co-author of the recently released open textbook “Learning Statistics with JASP: A Tutorial for Psychology Students and Beginners,” which is downloadable at www.learnstatswithjasp.com.
