STEPHENVILLE, Texas — The Tarleton State University Department of Fine Arts presents The Liar, David Ives’ hilarious 17th-century French farce April 5 – 9 at the theater of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center in Stephenville.

The curtain rises each night at 7:30.

Tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for senior citizens, children, and faculty and staff; and $5 for Tarleton students. The box office is open 2 -6 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour prior to show time each night.

Dorante is a charming young man newly arrived in 17th Century Paris, and he has but a single flaw: He cannot tell the truth. In quick succession he meets Cliton, a manservant who cannot tell a lie, and falls in love with Clarice, a charming young woman whom he unfortunately mistakes for her friend Lucrece.

What our hero regrettably does not know is that Clarice is secretly engaged to his best friend, Alcippe. Nor is he aware that his father is trying to get him married to Clarice, whom he thinks is Lucrece, who actually is in love with him.

From all these misunderstandings and a series of intricate lies springs one of the theater’s  greatest comedies, a sparkling urban romance written by Pierre Corneille and adapted by Ives.
