College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
What the test is:
CLEP allows students to demonstrate their mastery of introductory college-level material and earn college credit. There are several exams, but not all colleges have the same policies.
What is on the test:
The exams are divided into five categories: Business, Science & Mathematics, History & Social Sciences, World Languages, and Composition & Literature.
- Business exams cover various business disciplines.
- Financial Accounting, Information Systems, Introductory Business Law, Principles of Management, Principles of Marketing.
- Science & Mathematic exams cover various science disciplines and different levels of math.
- Science & Mathematic exams include Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, College Algebra, College Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Precalculus.
- History & Social Science exams cover topics related to history, economics, and psychology.
- History & Social Science exams include American Government, History of the United States I, History of the United States II, Human Growth and Development, Introduction to Educations Psychology, Introductory Psychology, Principles of Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics, Social Sciences & History, Western Civilization I: Ancient Near East to 1648, and Western Civilization II: 1648 to the Present.
- World Language exams assess comprehension of French, German, and Spanish.
- Language exams include French Language: Levels 1 and 2, German Language: Levels 1 and 2, Spanish Language: Levels 1 and 2, and Spanish with Writing: Levels 1 and 2.
- Composition and Literature exams cover topics related to American and British literature and composition.
- Composition and literature exams include American Literature, Analyzing and Interpreting Literature, College Composition, College Composition Modular, English Literature, and Humanities.
Cost of the test:
Students must first register on CollegeBoard. When registering on the CollegeBoard website, students will select their exam and pay a fee (not a Tarleton charge). Students will then return to the Tarleton testing website to schedule and pay any additional fees.
What do you need the test for?
CLEP was created to allow those with prior knowledge in certain subjects to earn their degree efficiently and inexpensively. Students that receive a high enough score will receive course credit for that subject. Official CLEP scores must be sent directly from College Board for evaluation.
